July 2022: We are recruiting! Have you got what it takes to be our new Headgate Manager?

Would you like to be a key part of a thriving community theatre?

Described as “a Jewel in Colchester’s Crown” the Headgate is a small community-run theatre with a great local reputation. We are looking for a Manager who is passionate and committed to the development and long term sustainability of our fantastic community resource in its well-equipped venue.

The Headgate has operated successfully, as a charity, since 2002, with a largely volunteer workforce. We have produced hundreds of amazing shows in-house and have been hosts to hundreds more. We support drama, dance, music, workshops and classes for all ages.

The remit for the Manager is wide. We are looking for the right person to help us maintain and operate our excellent facilities to the highest standards, to organise and inspire our volunteer work force and to help us engage with the next generation of audiences and theatre makers.

The job is demanding; it requires the post holder to work flexibly to suit the needs of the venue, including some evening and weekend duties. The Headgate is financially sound, it is well run, with effective policies and systems in place, supportive Trustees and committed volunteers. The Headgate’s highly experienced team of volunteers will work collaboratively with the post holder and their salaried assistant to make the job feasible, enjoyable and rewarding.

For this exciting opportunity we are looking for someone who has:

  • Excellent administrative and IT skills
  • A proven track record in working with and managing volunteers and paid staff
  • Commercial and budgetary experience
  • Experience of managing premises
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

The ideal candidate will also have experience in some of the areas outlined below:

  • Managing contracts for hire
  • Health and safety, including safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
  • Theatre technical equipment
  • Marketing through new and traditional media
  • Ticketing and box office
  • Fundraising and making grant applications

We appreciate that few candidates will be experienced in all these areas as the remit of the post is broad and wide ranging so training and mentoring will be available for the successful candidate/s. Ideally the postholder should be local to Colchester or willing to relocate.

The salary is £26,000 – £28,000 for a 35 hour week. The Headgate will consider applications for a job share or job split, or for shorter working hours with a proportional reduction in salary.

If you are interested in joining our team, please let our Company Secretary – recruitment@headgatetheatre.co.uk – have a summary of your experience and qualifications to date by CV together with a supporting statement. We are happy to arrange for an informal preliminary discussion of the role and can arrange for a tour of the venue with suitably qualified candidates. We will be considering applications as they arrive.
