Set and Props
We were fortunate to have Steve and Lorraine Dunt to organise what was required for props. Steve has an avid interest in history so enjoyed undertaking the research.
They had to make sure that tankards and containers etc were right for the pub scene. The 'assizes' where the trial took place had to be checked for anything contemporary on show and candles placed where appropriate.
Tables, chairs and benches also needed to be right for the period. To make it feel even more realistic, herbs were scattered on the floor as these were used to hide the obnoxious smells that were evident when a lot of people were gathered together.
The fair was one of the challenges as alongside chickens, tooth extractions, knife sharpening, shoe repairs, ribbons and lace were special potions, predictions for the future, bread and cheese, pipes, children's toys and grain. Some of the toys such as the spinning top and whirly wheel were made as were the benches and chicken carrier. John Worland made the scaffold which needed not only to be a very solid and safe construction but look historically accurate.
Straw and peat was scattered on the road for outdoor scenes. Local traders in Manningtree were most helpful and loaned items whenever we asked - their support was greatly valued.
